Hear from one of last year's EMFA winners

The countdown is well and truly on towards our deadline for your #Eastmidsfinanceawards entries but if you’re struggling a little with your entry, here are some wise words from Mark Gilbert, FD of 2019’s ‘Team of the Year’, Rutland Cycling.

How long have you worked in the region Mark?
A fair while now, over two decades in fact, with 10 years in Lincoln and then 12 years in Nottinghamshire. I currently work between Rutland and Nottinghamshire.

Why do you think the East Midlands performs so well as a hub for finance?
Mainly from the businesses that exist in the area. New ones of course but also the more established, successful ‘big names’ are a real pull. Consider the history and profile of Boots. They are still here, and I know that attracted the likes of Specsavers and Vision Express.

I also think the close proximity of some major cities like Notts/Derby/Leicester makes it easy to travel around. It is sometimes as if the three cities have created one giant hub between them. The region is also very easy to access and to reach other major cities from, alongside London, Manchester and Birmingham.

How might it be improved?
I don’t see any reason why it can't keep growing and become a real centre of excellence for finance and large corporations. We have the infrastructure in place, and it is encouraging to see us being very forward thinking and leading on green initiatives, whether it be public transport, the parking levy or the ambitious carbon neutral targets.

What does your day-to-day role entail?
A little bit of everything really. I’m the FD in a medium sized business (£40m) so at director level I drive and get involved in as much non-finance as finance, with input into commercial, IT and strategic plans. I want to help drive the business forward using my experience of other larger organisations and hopefully I am useful as a sounding board in a growth business

How did you first hear about the awards?
I’ve worked with the guys at Distinct for some time and last year’s event was fantastic, I’m sure this year will be even bigger and better. It’s a game changer in the awards world and where everyone else should aim to get to as there’s some fantastic work and some fantastic people out there doing brilliant jobs. They should be proud of that.
