2023 reflective: our favourite highlights of the year

This year has been a busy one for us here at Distinct. To wave goodbye to 2023, we’re looking back on our favourite highlights.

Expansion across London and North America

Our Directors Alex Alcock and Ryan Jaiswal are leading our expansion into London, with the finance market being our first port of call. We’re excited to now support professionals across all financial industry sectors, including advisory and professional practice roles.

Since launching over the pond, the US side of our business has grown from just five people in 2021, to 16 consultants and counting today!

In fact, we’re proud to say our US business has gone from strength to strength, with our public accounting service now extending across nine states including Massachusetts, New York, Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania.

Launching our US legal division

2023 also saw the formation of our new legal recruitment offering; partnering with boutiques, mid-sized firms and Am Law-ranked businesses alike.

Currently, we support associates, attorneys and partners across Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania – with plans for further growth in 2024.

We became finalists for Exporter of the Year 2023!

Due to our continued growth across the UK and US, we were thrilled to reach the finals of The Lloyds Bank British Business Excellence Awards; in the Department for Business and Trade’s category for Exporter of the Year.

We competed against innovative brands such as AceOn Group, Crep Protect, Ethoss Regeneration Ltd and Limbs & Things.

Although we didn’t quite take home the title, we’re glad to have been considered nonetheless. Congratulations to the winners, Rockit (N2M Limited)!

Our refreshed brand and new website

Beginning as a small office with just five people, Distinct opened its doors in 2016. Today, we have an international headcount of 50+.

With this growth, we’ve naturally evolved in many ways. Our new look and website mark the next step of our journey, entering a new era but retaining our core ethos of putting people first; whether that be our staff or our customers.

Find out how our refreshed image represents our people-first approach to ethical, responsible recruitment, in our Distinct rebrand announcement.

Our new website came with a number of new features; below are a couple of our most popular additions:

Salary calculator

Our new tool allows you to calculate your take-home pay on an annual, monthly, weekly, daily or hourly basis. Remove the guesswork, get instant results.

Exciting internal announcements

Starting our B Corp journey

Last year, we celebrated Distinct becoming a carbon-neutral business. Since then, we have continued to assess our carbon emissions and offset them on a rolling basis through our partner, Positive Planet.

Never ones to rest on our laurels, for 2023 we announced our long-term goal of becoming a certified B Corporation.

Forming an internal action team and bringing in outside help in the form of Samantha Beecham, we have implemented strategic changes within the business both internally and externally, with this proactive aim in mind.

There’s still work to be done, but we’re proud to be on this journey and will announce updates publicly when the time is right. Stay tuned!

Enhanced maternity pay

In October, our CEO, James Calder unveiled our new, enhanced maternity pay to support parents within our business. He stated:

“As a business, we are committed to our equality, diversity and inclusion strategy – and this is just the start.”

Our charity partnership with Operation Orphan

Throughout the year, we volunteered 288 hours with our charity partner, Operation Orphan.

Our consultants helped to sort and prepare donated items into aid packages for victims of the war in Ukraine and the tragic earthquakes in Türkiye and Hatay.

Operation Orphan’s local project, Forget-me-Notts, also supports vulnerable children in Nottingham and the surrounding areas. For Easter and the festive season, we donated 62 chocolate eggs and 169 selection boxes which were delivered to care groups.

In their words; “…together we will be able to provide these kids a sweet treat for Christmas, showing them they haven’t been forgotten.”

We were also delighted to take part in Experian’s Christmas toy appeal, donating gifts such as games, soft toys and craft kits for children aged 3-13, who may not have received a present this year otherwise.
