Public accounting salary in the US West: What our placement data reveals

In our recent North America public accounting salary guide, we analysed 400+ placements across 24 US states, DC and Ontario, breaking salary trends down by state, job level and CPA firm size.

This regional follow-up focuses on the Western US, specifically California, Colorado and Nevada, using salary data from Distinct’s public accounting placements over the last three years to explore how compensation differs across both geography and firm type.

Before diving into the data, it’s worth noting that the figures featured throughout this report are based on average salaries from Distinct’s public accounting placements over the last three years. They should be viewed as indicative market trends rather than definitive salary benchmarks, as compensation can vary significantly depending on factors such as experience, specialisation, firm size and local market conditions.

One additional caveat: compared to other regions, our dataset for the West is more limited, reflecting the fact that we have historically made fewer placements across these markets.

Key public accounting salary trends in the West

  1. California salaries remain relatively steady through early progression

California Associate salaries average $85,899 before rising more modestly to $96,758 at Senior level. More significant acceleration tends to happen later at Manager level ($125,764).

  1. Experienced hires command a premium in Colorado

While Colorado entry-level salaries sit below some larger markets, Manager compensation averages $132,488 and Partner salaries reach $190,147 – reinforcing how competitive smaller Western markets have become for experienced hires.

California: steady progression rather than sharp jumps

California continues to offer competitive early-career compensation, with Associate salaries averaging $85,899 across the dataset.

What stands out, however, is how measured progression remains through the early stages. Senior salaries rise to $96,758 before compensation increases more meaningfully at Manager level to $125,764.

That broadly mirrors one of the clearest themes from our wider North America report: progression from Associate to Senior is often flatter financially than many professionals expect, with the larger earnings jump typically coming later at Manager level.

Colorado: experienced hires command stronger premiums

Colorado tells a slightly different story.

Associate salaries average $76,189 and Senior salaries $88,099, but compensation accelerates sharply at experienced levels. Manager salaries rise to $132,488, while Partner compensation reaches $190,147.

For a smaller Western market, those figures are highly competitive and reinforce a wider trend seen throughout the dataset: experienced tax and audit professionals are increasingly commanding strong salaries outside the traditional major hubs.

Nevada: the outlier effect

Nevada ranks among the highest-paying markets in the wider North America report, with an average salary of $182,634. However, that figure is heavily influenced by the makeup of our dataset, which consists almost entirely of Top 200 Partner-level placements averaging $194,810.

What stands out most across the West is how differently salary progression can look depending on both market maturity and seniority.

California shows relatively stable progression early on, while Colorado becomes increasingly competitive at Manager and Partner level. Nevada, meanwhile, highlights how significantly senior-level placements can shape wider salary averages.

While this dataset highlights broader market trends, salary benchmarking is rarely one-size-fits-all. Factors such as firm size, specialisation, local demand and individual experience can all have a significant impact on compensation.
